Friends, followers, and loyal customers. You may have noticed that we’ve been pretty quiet over the past few months. Now that we have a few spare moments, it is time to deliver an update.
Mitmunk consists primarily of Heather and myself on the operations and design sides, respectively, though we are working now with local folks for both sewing and printing. Since 2011 we’d been lucky enough to focus exclusively on establishing and growing Mitmunk, supporting ourselves on the proceeds of our much-loved products—until last year. With rising living expenses and two constantly ravenous teenage sons to feed, we made the decision to return to full-time employment, while trying to keep Mitmunk alive in a part-time capacity. This split focus affected essential parts of the business like regular production runs, online updates, and correspondence, until we had to slow virtually to a stop a few months ago.
Earlier this year, we sold our printers, and tried working with a new printing business, starting with just a small batch. How did the results turn out? While I am no longer the one working the machines and pressing the artwork onto the fabric, the prints look sharper than they ever have before, and the shading and tonality have just as much depth as they used to, preserving the realistic look of our original designs. The colour profiles on these printers are different than our older settings, so the colours in this batch are somewhat lighter and cooler than usual. We may do more tests to deepen the tones somewhat, but for the most part we do like the bluer tone which makes the chainmail look more of a cold grey, compared to the warmer tones before.
This sample batch of leggings will be sold through our website starting Monday, September 26, 2016, 7:00 pm Pacific Time. This is just a very small batch with a very few pairs per size per design. Limited designs are available. They are sold at our current price. Because the overwhelming majority of our customers are based in the United States, and because of rising production costs, we plan to change our pricing after this to USD.
Having been essentially shut down for the past while, we don’t know how many people are still interested in buying what we’ve made, but we do know that we’ve disappointed folks in the past by not having enough stock. We’re doing our best to get back on track with production. I even designed a new pair of leggings and top that is about to be test-printed! At the same time, we don’t want to set concrete dates or make promises we can’t keep, so we’ll take it slowly and see if we can build our capacity little by little. Mitmunk has been a creative outlet for me to create the kind of wearable designs I’m passionate about, and I feel very fortunate that it took off to the extent it did.
In the meantime, if you’ve stuck around, a huge, sincere thank you. It is no mere platitude to say that Mitmunk wouldn’t exist without you.
Also: We’re going to be on a panel at Geek Girl Con in Seattle, Sunday October 9th, 4:30 pm to talk about The Business of Geek Fashion: Becoming An Entrepreneur! Go to their website for the full schedule. Update: Sorry, we cannot take part in the panel due to the logistics of traveling to the US. We hope everyone has a wonderful time at the convention with the other fantastic panelists.
TL;DR: We had to essentially close down this year, which is why we went incommunicado. We’re trying to get business started again, little by little, but it is hard. We’re selling a tiny sample batch of our leggings, printed using a new printer so the colours are slightly different and lighter than before. They’re available on www.mitmunk.com on Monday, September 26, 2016, 7:00 pm Pacific Time. Thanks for sticking around and hope you still like our stuff!
