The return of Mitmunk? + a few sample leggings for sale + GeekGirlCon

September 24, 2016 | Leave a comment

Friends, followers, and loyal customers. You may have noticed that we’ve been pretty quiet over the past few months. Now that we have a few spare moments, it is time to deliver an update.

Mitmunk consists primarily of Heather and myself on the operations and design sides, respectively, though we are working now with local folks for both sewing and printing. Since 2011 we’d been lucky enough to focus exclusively on establishing and growing Mitmunk, supporting ourselves on the proceeds of our much-loved products—until last year. With rising living expenses and two constantly ravenous teenage sons to feed, we made the decision to return to full-time employment, while trying to keep Mitmunk alive in a part-time capacity. This split focus affected essential parts of the business like regular production runs, online updates, and correspondence, until we had to slow virtually to a stop a few months ago.

Earlier this year, we sold our printers, and tried working with a new printing business, starting with just a small batch. How did the results turn out? While I am no longer the one working the machines and pressing the artwork onto the fabric, the prints look sharper than they ever have before, and the shading and tonality have just as much depth as they used to, preserving the realistic look of our original designs. The colour profiles on these printers are different than our older settings, so the colours in this batch are somewhat lighter and cooler than usual. We may do more tests to deepen the tones somewhat, but for the most part we do like the bluer tone which makes the chainmail look more of a cold grey, compared to the warmer tones before.

This sample batch of leggings will be sold through our website starting Monday, September 26, 2016, 7:00 pm Pacific Time. This is just a very small batch with a very few pairs per size per design. Limited designs are available. They are sold at our current price. Because the overwhelming majority of our customers are based in the United States, and because of rising production costs, we plan to change our pricing after this to USD.

Having been essentially shut down for the past while, we don’t know how many people are still interested in buying what we’ve made, but we do know that we’ve disappointed folks in the past by not having enough stock. We’re doing our best to get back on track with production. I even designed a new pair of leggings and top that is about to be test-printed! At the same time, we don’t want to set concrete dates or make promises we can’t keep, so we’ll take it slowly and see if we can build our capacity little by little. Mitmunk has been a creative outlet for me to create the kind of wearable designs I’m passionate about, and I feel very fortunate that it took off to the extent it did.

In the meantime, if you’ve stuck around, a huge, sincere thank you. It is no mere platitude to say that Mitmunk wouldn’t exist without you.

Also: We’re going to be on a panel at Geek Girl Con in Seattle, Sunday October 9th, 4:30 pm to talk about The Business of Geek Fashion: Becoming An Entrepreneur! Go to their website for the full schedule. Update: Sorry, we cannot take part in the panel due to the logistics of traveling to the US. We hope everyone has a wonderful time at the convention with the other fantastic panelists.

TL;DR: We had to essentially close down this year, which is why we went incommunicado. We’re trying to get business started again, little by little, but it is hard. We’re selling a tiny sample batch of our leggings, printed using a new printer so the colours are slightly different and lighter than before. They’re available on www.mitmunk.com on Monday, September 26, 2016, 7:00 pm Pacific Time. Thanks for sticking around and hope you still like our stuff!

Mitmunk's Official TRANSFORMERS line of printed apparel

Autobots, roll out! Mitmunk is excited to bring you our new line of official TRANSFORMERS printed apparel. We’re launching our new women’s and men’s long-sleeved shirts, vests, and leggings based on the Generation 1 Optimus and Megatron artwork. There will also be T-shirts featuring a range of Transformers from the original box art, quotes, and of course the iconic Autobot and Decepticon insignias.

Pre-order from our website starting Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 am Pacific Time to get in on the first print run. We’ll accept pre-orders until we reach the limit of what we can handle in one production run, or while supplies last, and go into production until we’re ready to accept the second round. The first 20 pre-orders will also come with a free t-shirt! The estimated completion time for the first print run is mid- to late-May (subject to change but we’ll update you along the way).

If you’re headed to Fan Expo Vancouver this weekend, you’ll be able to shop our new Transformers line first! Come visit us at Booth 714, April 3-5 at Vancouver Convention Centre.

BJJ and beyond: Mitmunk leggings reviewed on Breaking Muscle

Vostok printed leggings by Mitmunk

BJJ practitioners and other athletes: ever wondered how well Mitmunk leggings would hold up in grappling and other sports? Have a look at Sally Arsenault’s review on Breaking Muscle, where she describes wearing our Vostok leggings for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Great moisture wicking and grip, no “muffin top”, and a cool design to boot. Loads of useful information in the review, so you can feel confident about wearing your Mitmunk to the gym.

New online shop

January 14, 2015 | Leave a comment

When Mitmunk first started out in 2011, we started as a tiny operation in the corner of our living room and sold our printed t-shirts and 1″ buttons through Etsy. We were experimenting with vintage public domain illustrations, so the black-and-white lithographic style featured heavily in our designs. It was a slow start (I remember going to the post office once every couple of weeks to ship a single t-shirt order), but we gradually expanded to doing more exciting designs on printed leggings, shorts, and dresses, providing the perfect space for Wayne to put his video games artist’s skills to use.

Mitmunk tags in a box

After participating in the first Vancouver Alternative Fashion Weekend in November 2012 and showing our original Armour and Chainmail leggings, things really started taking off. We’ve been lucky to get the attention of people worldwide and features in geek blogs and websites. Our designs, inspired by video games character skins, connected us with a broader fandom, and it seemed as though we’d finally found our niche.

Three and a half years after our first sale, we’re pleased to announce that we’re launching our new online shop on our very own website, with the help of Petra Richli and Codepage. You can shop for your favourite Mitmunk garments directly from mitmunk.com. We’ll stock just the leggings here first, but as time goes on and streamline production of our different products, we’ll be moving those here too.

We’ll keep the Etsy shop open for the remaining old stock we have, sale items, and small-run handmade sample products.

To those of you who’ve just joined us, we’re glad you found us! To everyone who has followed us since the early days, you are the reason we’re still around. Thank you for your ongoing support. We’re expanding steadily and hope we can keep releasing products and designs you love, through 2015 and beyond.

As always, we love to see photos of how you all style your Mitmunk, so we invite you to join us on our social media pages and share your #Mitmunk looks.
